Restful sleep and hydration — glass of water on bedside table7-Step Programme for Physical Performance

Better sleep: how good hydration supports restful nights and regeneration

Thomas Freitag13 minutes

Good sleep is one of the most important foundations for performance — and one of the simplest, most overlooked factors is fluid balance. How water supports nightly regeneration, the glymphatic system and sleep quality.

Restful sleep is one of the most important foundations for performance — and one of the simplest, most overlooked factors is fluid balance. Those who drink well during the day support not just the day, but also the night.

1. Why restful sleep matters so much

During sleep the body replenishes its energy stores, the immune system works, the brain sorts impressions and consolidates what was learned. Those who sleep well wake refreshed — more focused, balanced and resilient. Yet when searching for restful nights we rarely think of one of the simplest factors: fluid balance.

2. Nightly regeneration and water

During sleep the body runs at full speed. Cells repair themselves, hormones are released, tissue recovers — all requiring water as a medium. The vicious circle: poor sleep and fluid deficit reinforce each other. Good daytime hydration breaks this cycle.

With fluid deficit

  • Dry mucous membranes
  • Nocturnal leg cramps
  • Restless sleep

With good hydration

  • Optimal nutrient transport
  • Smooth detoxification
  • Deeper, more restful sleep

3. The glymphatic system: brain cleansing during sleep

In 2012 Maiken Nedergaard and Jeffrey Iliff discovered a fluid-filled canal network in the brain that flushes out metabolic waste during sleep — the glymphatic system. During wakefulness its activity falls by ~95 %. Sleeping well and staying hydrated supports this natural brain cleansing.

Honest assessment: The research is still young and comes mainly from animal studies. The underlying principle remains compelling.

4. The balance: well during the day, moderate in the evening

DAY

Drink most of your daily fluid throughout the day — start in the morning, top up regularly.

EVENING

Reduce intake 1–2 hours before bed. A small glass when thirsty is fine — large amounts promote nocturia.

AVOID

Coffee, black tea and alcohol in the evening. Herbal tea or water are the better choice.

5. A healthy sleep environment

The German Society for Sleep Research (DGSM) names three well-evidenced factors: the bedroom should be dark, quiet and cool. Darkness promotes melatonin; bright light in the evening suppresses it. Our principle applies here too: don't believe — check for yourself. Don't charge your phone right next to your head, ban the TV from the bedroom, switch off Wi-Fi at night.

6. Water quality and further building blocks

Water typeConductivityFor cell metabolism
German tap water480–700 µS❌ Bus nearly full
Plose, Lauretana, Voss20–80 µS✅ Good
Trink Dich Fit station10–50 µS✅ Optimal — all 3 Vincent parameters
TOPMagnesium

Muscle-relaxing, calms the nervous system. In: nuts, wholegrains, legumes, green leafy vegetables.

STRONGCalcium

Can support melatonin secretion. In: dairy products, green vegetables, calcium-rich mineral water.

STRONGOmega-3 fatty acids

Building block of every cell membrane, important for the nervous system. In: oily fish, linseed oil, walnuts.

7. The EIGW.org 7-Step Programme

Restful sleep is the result of good daily habits. The EIGW.org 7-Step Programme for greater physical performance maps exactly this interplay: Ideal Water (1) → Movement (2) — daytime activity improves sleep quality → De-acidification (3) → Detoxification (4) → Nutrition: Mg, Ca, Omega-3 (5) → Regeneration (6) — sleep is this step: dark, quiet, cool → Targeted Performance Optimisation (7).

The SYN-ART movement connects people who live the 7-step programme together in everyday life (see hint block at the end).

8. Don't believe us — check for yourself

🍵 Tea test

Brew black tea with tap water and ideal water — tap water often shows an oily film.

🌸 Flower test

Same flowers in two vases — observe how long each stays fresh.

🐾 Animal test

A second bowl with ideal water next to the usual one — the animal chooses freely.

🪟 Window test

Clean a window with only ideal water — often dries streak-free due to low conductivity.

9. Frequently asked questions

Does drinking water help with falling asleep?

Water is not a sleep aid — but adequate hydration during the day supports nightly regeneration and can reduce cramps and restlessness. Drink moderately in the evening to avoid nocturia.

What is the glymphatic system?

A fluid-filled canal network in the brain discovered in 2012 that flushes out metabolic waste during sleep (Nedergaard & Iliff). During wakefulness its activity is reduced by ~95 %. Good sleep and sufficient water support this cleansing process.

How much should you drink in the evening?

Drink most of your daily amount during the day. Reduce 1–2 hours before bed. A small glass when thirsty is fine — large amounts promote nocturia and disrupt deep sleep.

Which nutrients support good sleep?

Magnesium (muscle-relaxing, nerve-stabilising), calcium (can promote melatonin secretion) and omega-3 fatty acids (cell membrane, nervous system). All three are found in food — no product needed.

Your next steps

Knowledge is the first step — implementation is the second.

Trink Dich Fit is a programme of EIGW. For the hardware of our Trink Dich Fit water stations we work with Ideal Water as implementation partner.
