Healthy joints and nutrition - omega-3, MSM and turmeric7-Step Programme for Physical Performance

Joints & Nutrition: Omega-3, MSM, Turmeric and the Dr Feil Strategy

Thomas Freitag10 minutes

Part 2: The building blocks that keep joints supple from within. Omega-3, MSM, turmeric and boswellia — what the science says, what Dr Feil recommends, and how water quality plays a central role.

Back to Part 1 - Cartilage, synovial fluid and the sponge model

The right water is the foundation - but nutrition provides the building blocks that keep joints genuinely supple. Omega-3 fatty acids, MSM, turmeric, boswellia: these are substances that support joint function in a targeted way.

1. The Dr Feil strategy for joints

Sports physician Dr. Robert Feil has developed an approach to joint health that goes well beyond "drink more water". His strategy combines three levels: water quality as the foundation, targeted nutrients as building blocks, and movement as the activator. All three reinforce each other.

2. Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are the building block of every cell membrane - including cartilage cells. They have anti-inflammatory effects and support the flexibility and regeneration of joint tissue. The Omega-3 index (proportion of EPA and DHA in red blood cells) is measurable - an index above 8 percent is considered protective.

Sources: Oily sea fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), linseed oil, walnuts, algae oil (vegan). For targeted supplementation: check Omega-3 index first.

3. MSM - methylsulfonylmethane

MSM is an organic sulphur compound that occurs naturally in many foods. Sulphur is a component of collagen - the structural protein of cartilage and connective tissue. MSM is well tolerated and is one of the most studied natural substances for joint support. In: cruciferous vegetables, eggs, garlic.

4. Turmeric and boswellia

Both plant substances have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine and are increasingly the subject of scientific research. The active substance in turmeric (curcumin) and boswellic acids from frankincense resin are studied primarily in the context of inflammatory processes. Both are generally well tolerated - the bioavailability of curcumin is improved when taken with black pepper (piperine).

Honest assessment: We name substances and foods, not products. These building blocks can support - they are not a substitute for medical advice with existing joint conditions.

5. The substance hierarchy at a glance

FOUNDATIONIdeal water (low conductivity)

Transport medium for all nutrients - the bus that brings building blocks to the cartilage.

TOPOmega-3 (EPA + DHA)

Anti-inflammatory, cell membrane building block, measurable via Omega-3 index.

STRONGMSM + Vitamin C

Sulphur for collagen, vitamin C for collagen synthesis. Both needed simultaneously.

SUPPORTTurmeric + Boswellia

Plant substances that support joint function. Turmeric best with black pepper.

6. Water quality: the transport medium for all building blocks

Water typeConductivityAll 3 Vincent parameters
German tap water480-700 uSConductivity only
Plose, Lauretana, Voss20-80 uSConductivity + pH good

7. The EIGW.org 7-Step Programme

The EIGW.org 7-Step Programme for greater physical performance brings water and nutrition together: Ideal Water (1) - Movement (2) - De-acidification (3) - Detoxification (4) - Nutrition: omega-3, MSM, turmeric (5) - Regeneration (6) - Targeted Performance Optimisation: Omega-3 index check (7). The SYN-ART movement connects people living this programme together.

8. Frequently asked questions

Does omega-3 help with joint pain?

Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects and support cell membrane flexibility. The Omega-3 index is measurable - an index above 8% is considered protective. Not a substitute for medical treatment.

What is MSM?

Methylsulfonylmethane - an organic sulphur compound that is a component of collagen. Naturally found in cruciferous vegetables, eggs and garlic. Well studied as a joint support substance.

How does water quality affect joints?

Water is the transport medium for all nutrients to cartilage cells. Low-conductivity water (all 3 Vincent parameters optimised) has the most free transport capacity - like a bus with many empty seats.

Your next steps

Knowledge is the first step - implementation is the second.
